Velocity Staff, Inc. is working with our client in Champaign, IL to identify a full-time Senior Engineer or scientist to lead the development and commercialization of microbatteries based on our client's technologies.


Qualified candidates will be responsible for the design, development, fabrication, optimization, and testing of a new classes of microbatteries. The candidate will supervise interns and technical staff, work with external partners to integrate the microbatteries into subsystems and devices, and work with the client leadership team to define the short and long-term goals of the company. The candidate must be a self-starter, able to work independently in a team environment. The ideal candidate should demonstrate an ability to plan, prioritize and execute experiments in an efficient and timely manner. Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills through a record of publications and conference presentations as well as excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team of co-workers.


Using patented and proprietary technologies our client is manufacturing rechargeable large format and micro-batteries with unprecedented power and energy densities.  The company's headquarters is near Dayton, Ohio, and the large format battery program is based there. The microbattery program is based in the Enterprise Works Building on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.



  • A M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field with considerable experience preferred.
  • Organization with samples and data to ensure traceability and provide data-driven analysis that can be relied upon to guide material selection decisions.
  • Track record of developing intellectual property.
  • Outstanding level of scientific and process integrity leading to reliable and confident results
  • Hands-on experience in microfabrication and thin film deposition.
  • Candidate must have solid electronic fabrication experience. 
  • Electrochemistry experience preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with standard materials characterization instrumentation including but not limited to X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Optical Microscopy.
  • Able to use advanced analytical techniques for obtaining and interpreting structure—property relationships.
  • Self-starter capable of meeting objectives with minimum supervision.
  • Successful track record in product development is a plus.
